Associate Artistic Director
Campfire Repertory Theatre — Chicago, IL
9-Month Term (September–May) • Part-Time Leadership
Role Compensation: $4,500 + Bonuses & Initiative Funding Eligibility
About the Position
Campfire Repertory Theatre is seeking an Associate Artistic Director to join our year-round leadership team in a producing and artistic partnership role. This is a 9-month, part-time position (September through May) rooted in collaborative decision-making, community engagement, and youth theatre stewardship.
The Associate Artistic Director will serve alongside the Founding Artistic Director in a shared-leadership model. Each seasonal activation has a designated lead; when one artistic leader drives a project, the other supports to ensure balance, quality, and mission alignment.
This role includes a voting seat on the Campfire Rep board, granting active participation in company direction and ownership of organizational choices.
Responsibilities
Shared Leadership (Equal Authority)

Curate and select the Campfire Rep season

Make casting decisions

Hire creative and production teams
-
Approve major budgets above a shared threshold

Co-direct the Youth Theatre production

Co-teach youth classes and lead rehearsals
-
Co-produce one seasonal staged reading

Participate in company-wide leadership planning
-
Maintain upcoming partnerships and season strategy
-
Serve as a voting board member on artistic and operational decisions
Primary Lead for This Position
The Associate Artistic Director will lead the following, supported by the Founding AD:

Free/accessible community production

One workshop
-
One community-centered joy event
-
Producing the Youth Theatre final performance, including:

Front-of-house execution
-
Volunteer coordination
-
Performance logistics and event flow

Compensation & Benefits
Term Pay: $4,500 for the 9-month role, distributed as a seasonal leadership stipend.

Full voting power on season planning, casting, hires, and major budgets

Direct ownership of artistic direction and producing lanes

Ability to propose new funded initiatives and productions

Seat at all internal leadership planning sessions

Producer support from the Founding AD on role-led projects

Season comps (complimentary tickets/transfers) to all Campfire Rep programming, including:

Productions

Workshops

Staged readings

Community events

Youth Theatre performances

Bonus & Initiative Funding Eligibility
Additional bonuses or expanded compensation may be awarded for:

Grant awards that increase season scope

New partnerships or co-productions secured

Special initiatives proposed and approved by the board
